Robert C."Bob" Whitaker, II

Passed away on April 20, 2018, at the age of 76. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Robert and Marian Whitaker. He is survived by his beloved wife Louise (Nee Larson); his loving children Robert and Patrick (Michelle); and his cherished grandchildren Maura, Rob, Emmett, Evan, Benjamin, and Cole Whitaker. He is further survived by his dear brother Michael Whitaker, and numerous other friends and family, including Shannon Fogarty. Bob worked at Northwestern National Insurance Company for many years. In the past he volunteered with the Boy Scouts, the Milwaukee Art Museum, UPAF and United Way of Greater Milwaukee. Bob loved being grandpa and "poppy" to his grandchildren, and spending time in Northern Wisconsin. Private services will be held. 2018 Wisconsin Dells Reunion/Retreat

Even though the weather is not what we usually expect this time of year, we have the plans in place for our annual reunion at WI Dells.

This year, we will be staying at Cedar Lodge, which is right next to Rivers Edge where we have been for many years. It's on the opposite side of the road from where we were before, just down the street a bit from Rivers Edge. Fred Peebler and Brian Garvey make a trip to the area to find new accommodations and found this resort which looks to be better than we have had in the past.

The dates that we have reserved cabins are Tues, Wed and Thurs nights, May 15, 16 and 17, the week after Mother's Day. We will be in cabins 27, 28 and 29. As in the past, it's first come first serve on who gets what rooms, but we will again have some rooms available for the heavy snorers.  Their website is www.cedarlodgedells.com and I would suggest going to the website to get some additional details. The rate per night per person is expected to be in the $60.00 to $65.00 range with a few extra dollars being added for combined meals.

You are welcome to stay as many nights as your schedules permit or just come for the annual Wednesday night cookout feast. Please let me know as soon as you can if and when you will be able to join us.

Beta Chi Returning To UWM???

On another front, a small group of us have been in discussions with personnel at UWM as well as the IFC (InterFraternity Council) about coming back on campus. There have been meetings and presentations made and the IFC has unanimously agreed that we would be welcome to come back on campus again. Thanks to Brian Garvey, Jim Ihlenfeld, Kent Ehley for their efforts to get the ball rolling again.

We learned that Greek life on campus is different and smaller in scope from what we had in the '60's and 70's. There are only 6 or so fraternities and 3 sororities with a few extra groups that have some level of activity. Total Greek membership around 125.

At the last meeting, the presidents of the current fraternities and members of IFC were overwhelmed with all of the activities - social, service and fellowship that we were involved in. They feel that we could play a key role in getting the Greek community back to where it was.

Sound kind of crazy for a bunch of old guys to be engaged in this type of activity? Absolutely, but if you had been at this last meeting, you would have seen the excitement to hear how a local fraternity, such as Beta Chi, can make a significant impact on college men and UWM.

There is much planning and activity that needs to be done to make it happen and make it successful. Some of this includes setting up an LLC for legal and financial protection, establishing a plan and executing it for getting pledges and members on board as well as sharing the traditions that we had. So we'll need some additional local help as well as some financial assistance in getting the legal items completed and initial efforts on campus completed. We'll keep you posted on progress. If any of you have some initial interest in learning about this campaign, contact any of us to learn more. We will have several discussions on this at our reunion at the Dells.
